Barrio Agham

Pueblo Science has created a series of high-quality online STEM activities targeted at high school students (grades 7 to 12) in the Philippines. The program, called Barrio Agham, produces short video tutorials of fun, hands-on science experiments three times a week. In each video, a Pueblo instructor demonstrates and provides easy-to-follow instructions on how to perform the experiment. During each live stream, there is at least one instructor available in a live chat to answer any questions or provide troubleshooting assistance.

The goal of this program is to engage students in the Philippines. Therefore, all experiments use materials that are commonly found in Philippine households.  The program goes live in ”Taglish” at 3pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (starting May 12) and delivered by professional scientists and educators in the Philippines with advanced degrees in science as well as a passion for teaching students.

Riza is currently employed as a researcher at the Marine Science Institute in the University of the Philippines – Diliman. Their research group focused on the effects of trace metals and macronutrients on the growth and toxicity
of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

She previously worked as a Product Development and Regulatory Officer at a local Agrochemical company. She’s also a former researcher at the Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory of the Research Center for Environmental Changes in Academia Sinica (Taipei, Taiwan) where they specialized in trace metal analysis in various marine samples. Moreover, she spent years doing research in various fields in Chemistry such as natural products, synthetic inorganic chemistry, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and development of methods to analyze heavy metal pollutants in the environment.

Riza was also a part of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) as a Professional Fellow in Fall 2019 at the United Stated. It is a program established by the US government to strengthen the capabilities of young leaders in Southeast Asia by promoting cross-border cooperation in addressing regional and global challenges. She was selected to participate under the Sustainable Development and the Environment cohort where she focused on learning about sustainable agricultural practices in the US that could be adopted in the Philippines.

Since 2014, she has been working with Pueblo Science to promote its mission of uplifting science literacy in developing countries. She has served as a volunteer workshop facilitator in various locations in the Philippines (Rizal, South Cotabato, Iloilo, Nueva Ecija, Davao, Palawan, and Ilocos Norte) and Thailand (Phitsanulok).

Marty is currently employed as a University Researcher at the Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) where he heads the institute’s Analytical Service Laboratory.
He was a former faculty member at the Institute of Chemistry – UPLB, where he taught General and Organic Chemistry subjects, and a former research associate at Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI) UP Diliman.
Currently, he is involved in various externally funded projects related to improvement of nutritional quality of crops, crop resistance to biotic stress, and germplasm collection screening and utilization.
As a science literacy advocate, Marty serves as a Science Teacher Volunteer of Pueblo Science since 2014 and traveled around the Philippines (Davao, Ilocos, Iloilo, Coron, Laguna, Puerto Princesa) to teach science teachers simple and easy-to-do experiments using locally available materials.
In his free time, you will find him either sleeping, eating or playing volleyball or Mobile Legends.
